Shira Route
A western high-altitude approach joining the southern circuit; careful acclimatization is important from the start.
Route selection should take account of the number of trekking days, altitude profile, daily walking demands, preferred accommodation style and the climber’s preparation. Mountain weather and individual response to altitude vary, so the program is paced by the guide rather than treated as a race to higher elevations.

Detailed Shira Route Program
The schedule below uses the detailed Kilimanjaro route material supplied for this website. Camp or hut timing can change with trail, weather and operational conditions, and guide safety decisions always take priority.
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport when booked, meet the mountain team and review the route, clothing and personal equipment. Any missing rental gear can be arranged before departure. This briefing is separate from the seven trekking days.
Drive to the western side of Kilimanjaro for registration at Londorossi Gate, then continue by vehicle toward the Shira trailhead when road conditions allow. Begin trekking across the high Shira Plateau toward Shira 1 Camp. Because this route starts at a relatively high elevation, pacing and hydration are important from the first day.
Cross the Shira Plateau with broad views toward Kibo and the western side of the mountain. The route gains elevation gradually through moorland, allowing the guide to keep a controlled pace. An optional acclimatization walk may be used later in the afternoon depending on weather and how the group is feeling.
Climb toward Lava Tower, reaching a substantially higher elevation before descending to Barranco Camp. This climb-high, sleep-lower profile is one of the key acclimatization days. The terrain becomes more arid and volcanic as the route approaches Lava Tower, then descends into the Barranco Valley beneath the southern glaciers.
Start with the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble where guides manage spacing and pace. After the wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. This shorter day leaves additional time for rest and acclimatization before moving higher.
Leave Karanga and climb into the alpine-desert zone toward Barafu Camp. The afternoon is used for rest, an early meal and final summit preparation. The guide checks clothing layers, headlamp, water and personal equipment before the overnight summit attempt.
Start around midnight for the steep ascent toward Stella Point on the crater rim, then continue toward Uhuru Peak if conditions and individual health permit. After summit photos and a short stop, descend to Barafu for rest and food before continuing down to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most demanding day of the route.
Descend through montane forest to Mweka Gate, complete park exit formalities and receive a summit certificate if the summit criteria were met. Meet the transfer vehicle and return to Moshi for a shower and rest. An additional hotel night or airport transfer can be arranged.
